Fight or Flight

Another checkup yesterday. I do have gestational diabetes, but it's a mild case. I don't have to check my sugar throughout the day or take any drugs, but here are foods I must avoid:

white rice
white bread
cake
cookies
ice cream
doughnuts
pretty much all other sweets
fruit (in large quantities)
fruit juice
whole milk
sodas
other sugary beverages

I'll also need to eat proteins with carbohydrates.

The best part of the checkup, though, was the Doppler. This is a Doppler, for those of you who don't know:

With that little wand on the right, you can hear the fetal heartbeat. Message board lore has it that fetuses hate the Doppler, and I've read several posts by women who said that their fetuses scramble to get away from the wand on their abdomens. FG, however, held still for the heartbeat check for a few seconds, but then gave the wand a vigorous KICK. Perfect aim, right on the tip of the wand.

Memories . . .

Mr. 13 is (big shock) thirteen, and Ms. 7 actually turns eight on Sunday, but ooooohhhhh, you are bringing back memories. One nurse always ended up giving me blood draw bruises that lasted for months--and *hurt.* Kind of amusing to watch the marks go from black to blue to green to yellow, but I lived in fear of that nurse (older, very sweet, nothing Ratched-y about her at all) coming at me with a needle.

No cupcakes. Sigh. Lived on burgers (craving a burger is the first thing I recall about that pregnancy) and peanut butter (and, um, potato chips with very tart lemonade, no clue why) with Mr. 13, but it was *all* about your no-nos with Ms. 7 (almost eight), especially the baked goods.

But, you're almost there. Soon, it will be time to meet this little person. And you know what? When you hold the baby, you *will* recognize those moves as the ones that were unfolding inside you. The dance is one you'll be utterly familiar with. So cool.
