Hugh Burns Award
I'm very happy to say that I have received the 2006 Hugh Burns Best Dissertation Award, given each year by the journal Computers and Composition. In 1979, Burns wrote the first computers and composition dissertation. Here I am with him:
That sheet is a facsimile of a plaque I'll receive later.

Wonderful!
Art Walzer sent an e-mail to the department about this event. I thought it was the coolest thing I'd seen in a while. Not surprising, of course, but still very cool.
I'm still new enough to the community of serious scholars that news like this has a somewhat surreal effect, like a reminder that I'm living in a dream world. I find myself thinking, "Hey! I actually know someone who won a dissertation award!" Plus, it's nice to be reminded that even people who struggle with their dissertations (as you did) can end up with brilliant ones. I think that reminder is going to come in handy pretty soon here.
Anyway. Didn't mean to make a huge deal out of this. But I'm glad to hear the news.
Yay you!
The folks at the journal are obviously a clever bunch.
