Biographical Awareness

As you can probably tell, I'm really enjoying Heilbrun's book. I'll likely post more about it in the coming weeks. I find myself wondering if Nels and Prof. B. have read it, and if so, what they think of it. I also wonder what Heilbrun would have thought about all these women who are writing about their lives every day on their weblogs.

As an aside, I created this comic of sorts before I saw that Collin just put up a much better one. Do read it.

"...also wonder what Heilbrun would have thought about all these women who are writing about their lives every day on their weblogs."

yeah, especially because the women get first crack at interpreting their lives, though that wouldn't stop anyone from editing out the "bad stuff" if the chose, nor would it stop others from interpreting the woman in a different way than she saw herself.

I'm interested in why your grandmother didn't just write the stories down herself. Was she thinking that it would be a great shared activity? Was she convinced that she couldn't write? My grandmother was the opposite--I've uncovered letters, diaries and drafts of essays about her life, and as I read them, I wonder what is revised and what is true. She left out her upbringing in Tennessee, so I've wondered if she wasn't trying to edit herself into a more "respectable" light, at least insofar as her book draft went. Who knows? She died thirty years before I was born, so I can only guess.

You Bet I Have!

Have I read it? It was the second book I read in the first women's lit class I ever took. The first was A Room of One's Own. I read it a few times after that, and taught a couple of chapters when I first started teaching women's lit. It is a smart yet accesbile book that doesn't take long to read. Actually, it's probably been a decade since I read it, so I would probably benefit from a a reread, especially to check out what I highlighted then.

BTW, how do you create the cartoons like this? Is it a special website or program or just plain photoshop?
