Questions
- Why am I dreading finishing up my acknowledgements page and my dissertation abstract so much?*
- What should I do in Minneapolis/St. Paul for the couple of days/nights I'll be there?**
* Okay, I know why I'm foot-dragging with the acknowledgements: They're not really required, but folks tell me I'm obliged to have them in there, and I think the whole thing is cheesy and a little too sentimental.
** What I want to do: see Strangers With Candy and Snakes on a Plane. They're not playing in Greenville. But that doesn't seem right, really; I should do something that really gives me the Minneapolis/St. Paul experience. Unfortunately, I'll be a little too early for the great Minnesota get-together and a little too late for the Fringe Festival, but there are lots of things uniquely characteristic of the place that I can do -- hang out in Dinkytown one last time, go to the Bryant-Lake Bowl, something. I guess I'm thinking movies would be the thing just because I'll be so drained from the defense that all I'll want to do is sit in a movie theater and eat popcorn. Plus I'm not sure if anyone else will want to get together, so I'll need to plan stuff I can do by myself if necessary.

the other reason
The other reason you're dragging your feet is that it's one of those things where the people you should really thank won't care, and the ones who will care are the ones who probably don't deserve mention. You (and really I mean I) launch into all sorts of sociomoral calculi: how can I include this person but not that one? How can I name some colleagues and not others? blah blah blah.
Yuck. My advice? 5 or 6 names with large categories for everyone else. Keep it short, sweeping, and matter of fact.
(Now to go into my half-written acks and to take my own advice...)

Hang out with Prince. You won't get the chance again for a long long time.

hang out with me!
i'll go out with u. i'm big as a house and the movies is perfect for me.
i can't remember your dates here but T is going away so i'm pretty flexible - movies, dinner, minneap stuff - i'm open!
Cool
Yeah, I was thinking an OCB visit is in order too, Rachel.
Also, I don't want to sound ungrateful re the acknowledgements. Lots of people have helped me, and I want to thank them; I guess I just feel awkward about writing it up. I'd rather send a personal thank-you note.
Your presentation
I'm not sure what you finally decided to do after your defense, but I think the presentation itself went very well. Bringing my kids probably wasn't the ideal plan, but they go pretty much everywhere with me these days, and I really didn't want to miss your presentation. I'm glad I was there.

The kids were great!
Hey, they didn't bother me in the LEAST. I just hope some of that material wasn't too inappropriate for them, or if it was, that they were so bored and tuned out that they didn't notice.
Glad you liked my presentation. Rachel and I went out for dinner afterward; I had a good time!
