DevonThink: I don't get it
After reading a post on Becky's blog a while back, I decided to download DevonThink for reading notes. After playing around with it, though, I have realized that I don't really get this tool and why it's better than just storing all of one's reading notes as text files in the same folder and then searching them with Spotlight or Google Desktop when you need to find something. I guess what I don't quite understand is the tagging system.

Devonthink
I'm not sure how Becky uses it, and I'm not a Devonthink user myself (would need a Mac), but I remembered these two references to it from Steven Johnson. I've been trying to get the most out of a similar system where I'm keeping notes for exams. With a confluence of matching tags, each entry is associated with other notes entries (based upon loose translation rather than specificity in search terms).

I was going to link the same things that Derek did. As I recall, one of the things that really recommended DT to Johnson (and others) was its ability to do auto-recommendations, but that requires a critical mass of docs in the database (I vaguely recall SJ saying that he had a research assistant scanning stuff in for him...)
Plus, if you check the 43F posts on it, DT also allows you to import del.icio.us bookmarks, and other online stuff that wouldn't be easily or quickly available to you in a desktop folder...

I don't get it either. Just
I don't get it either. Just what is Devon Thinking when he made DevonThink...
I know lame joke..ahahahhahaha
DevonThink made me think.
DevonThink made me think. Haha. Lame too I know. Anyway, I guess it's just another attempt to simplify that turned out wrong. Some things just aren't meant to be changed I guess. DevonThink? Think again.
