"ward" vs. "wards"

I never know which word to use: "toward" or "towards." For economy's sake, I prefer "toward," but I really just think consistency is in order. Say "forward," "backward," "upward," "downward," "toward," "westward," "eastward," etc., or put the "s" at the end of all of them.

Sigh..."towards" does win the Google fight, though.

without the S is more abstract

"Towards" indicates concrete direction in terms of travel n/s/e/w; without the S indicates abstract ideological travel.

So say the textbooks, arbitrarily.

But you ask for a reason. Is that query (1) linguistic or (2) pedagogical?
