Rana's back!

Like Jenny, I can't get enough of group hug. I have a paranoid fantasy that the administrators of the site are collecting information on the contributors through some behind-the-scenes means and are waiting to do a massive blackmail. Have you read what people write there? Lots of stuff that would get folks in trouble, like violent 1nc3$+, etc.

Speaking of Jenny, go congratulate her! Her piece in Postmodern Culture just came out.

Your picture looks great, btw. :)

They're not planning a blackmail list, they're planning a book.

Yeah, I saw that

But as long as they're going to profit from the confessions, they might as well get money from the publisher AND the contributors, right? That's what I'd do. :P

grouphug.us

i don't see the intoxication of grouphug.us. the premise of the website is intriguing - guaranteed anonymity in a public confessional... and for readers, to see that there are others out there with secrets to pour. but... that's it. maybe it comes down to human primal desires of voyeurism of sorts? - anyna.

Not Proud AND Group Hug

In Barnes & Noble today, I saw Not Proud: A Smorgasbord of Shame. Then I found out that notproud.com has been around for years. I can't believe there's enough demand out there for money to be made from TWO books of anonymous online confessions. (Group Hug's is Stoned, Naked, and Looking in My Neighbor's Window : The Best Confessions from GroupHug.us.)

Thank you for noticing that n

Thank you for noticing that notproud.com has been operating for years.

This is actually the second published collection by notproud.com, who released the limited-print "Murder, Incest and Catfood Sandwiches" in 2003 -- the same time that grouphug.us first debuted. This latest effort is from Simon Spotlight Entertainment, who produced the wildly successful He's Just Not That Into You.

grouphug.us honorably makes no claim to originality, rather touting itself as "the fastest growing" confession site on the internet, thanks to their truly amazing skills of self-promotion. They are now offering a beta subscription service that will allow visitors to comment on confessions for a one-time payment of a dollar. This can only have a negative affect on the quality of confessions as it moves towards a model that encourages playing for a reaction.

And, less kindly, aren't group hugs something most of us run screaming from? Confessions are about getting it off your chest, not about being told it is alright.

Since 2000, notproud.com has provided a blank slate where confessions stand starkly alone, succeeding or failing on their own merits. There are no bloggy comments on individual confessions, and no pictorials of its posturing founders. The belief is that this illicits the most powerful, scandalous, and hilarious confessions.

Is there enough room in the market for *two* books of anonymous online confessions? One certainly hopes not.
