I Watched It

...the State of the Union address, I mean: and while I understand the reluctance and dread I've seen expressed on a good number of lefty blogs and cited as reasons they didn't watch the speech, I can't help but think it's important to watch it anyway. Confront it, study it -- not just "it" as in the content but the way the content is presented, explained, and delivered. As can be expected, having watched the speech I have a much more vivid understanding of the setting and the affect experienced by the audience, Bush, the other officials, and the "special guests." I absolutely do not, in any way, want to reprove anyone who chose not to watch the speech, but that's what I think.

I've been thinking about this

I've been thinking about this ever since chatting briefly with you and P. about this at the Blogumentary event. What you say is cool, and I might even be able to stomach watching such things if I were watching with people doing analyses such as you suggest (not for me, but with me ;-). Although I feel like I'm already swimming in a world in which I don't need to watch debates or state addresses in order to be confronted with those opportunities; they're all around me -- in comments by family members, in newspaper editorials, on the tv news, talk shows, etc. I actually feel a greater need to immerse myself in friendly discourse as another way to counteract the brainwashing of daily life. My talents and interests lie in different directions. While being skilled at these kinds of analyses would help me in whatever endeavor I undertake, it seems that there is an endless list of useful skills to build and I'm not sure that I have time for it all. In my ideal world I'd be able to use my skills and talents and rely on the differing skills and talents of those around me. Maybe next time there's a similar opportunity, I'll invite you and some friends over and I'll try to be open to being converted!
