Carnivals and Such

  • Go to the Carnivals! There's the Teaching Carnival and the Feminist Carnival.
  • I've had Alabama's The Closer You Get in my mind all day. What's up with that?
  • A good friend of mine who recently finished her Ph.D. said about dissertation writing: "Eventually you get to this point where you know you're going to finish it." I'm there. The chapter I'm working on now is going well, and quickly. All I wanna do is zooma-zoom-zoom-zoom and a boom-boom. I have full confidence that I'll be done with this thing before August 06.
  • I've decided to take a new tack with my treadmill running. Instead of being hyper-vigilant about my time, I'm just entering a distance into the machine (2.5 miles today) and slowing down when I feel like it. I don't have a specific running goal, and I don't know what the best practices are for training.

Runner's World

Runner's World magazine (http://www.runnersworld.com/) has great tips for runners. In particular, look at the training section, under Beginners (http://www.runnersworld.com/category/1,5034,s6-51-184-0-0,00.html).

My running schedule has been limited to a trickle lately, and even one or two weeks of inactivity can set you back (I discovered this morning, when I was too tired to run after a mile or so, and walked the rest instead...for shame!). But I know that if you keep at it, you'll be fitter in no time (really, it's amazing how quickly you build endurance for these things). My initial approach was to walk 5 min, run 20 (at about 5 mph), and then walk another 5. In a matter of a couple of weeks, I would run 25 min, faster, and then a few weeks later, 30 min, also faster, too. 1 1/2 month of regular treadmilling like this (3 times/week at least, that is), I could run 4-5 miles. Since I don't want to run a marathon, my goal is to reduce my time (well, when I get back in shape, that is!) from now on. And btw, I personally can't do it without a high-energy music mix on my MP3 player!

Well, for all it's worth....

Glad your writing is going well...

I'm glad your diss is going well. Love this: "All I wanna do is zooma-zoom-zoom-zoom and a boom-boom." :)

Thanks for the mention. The teaching carnival is great, although I've just scratched its surface.

Cheers,
